How to measure
your sleep quality?

Probably the most important question people with sleep problems ask themselves is: what can I do about it?

First of all, you need to know whether your own sleep is really restful.

The decisive criterion is whether you suffer from fatigue during the day.

If you are very tired or even exhausted for many hours, the reason may actually be poor sleep quality.

Before you have your sleep quality medically clarified, you have to deal with your daytime tiredness.

We are all subject to the so-called basic rest-activity cycle (BRAC). These are performance units that last between 60 and 120 minutes.

Put simply, a BRAC is a complete sleep cycle.

We go through BRAC's even during the day without sleeping. They are the reason why we are powerful or tired at certain times of the day.

The midday sleepiness, for example, occurs in most people and is not a sign of poor sleep quality.

However, if fatigue persists throughout the day, further clarification is essential.

By measuring your heart rate variability 24 hours a day, you can get very accurate answers about your sleep quality.

The quality of relaxation and recovery is measured to the millisecond. It is not advisable to measure the sleep quality with tracking apps, because the results do not correspond to the clinical quality criteria and can be falsified accordingly.

Your learnings:

  • Phased daytime tiredness does not mean that the quality of sleep is poor.
  • If you suffer from latent or severe fatigue for most of the day, you should definitely measure your sleep quality.
  • In contrast to sleep tracking apps, a 24-hour HRV measurement gives you an exact statement about your sleep quality.
